Whats the fuss about the Concord Cannibals Triathlon Club?
Concord Tri Club (CTC) is a not-for profit organisation affiliated with Triathlon NSW to support and promote the sport of triathlon in inner western Sydney. Since beginning operation in 1992, CTC calls the beautiful inner-western bay areas its home, operating out of both Cabarita and Drummoyne swim centres.
CTC is founded on encouragement and support, endeavouring to deliver a program that scales, and is relevant for all levels - seasoned triathletes, entry-level triathletes, those curious about the sport, right through to individuals who simply want a competitive edge to their get-fit / keep-fit program. The main focus of the club is delivering relevant, fun content, assisting members with their fitness, and providing support in the tri-sport disciplines - all whilst offering a program run with safety to members and the public.
CTC runs a program each Wednesday evening from pool opening in September, through until its close in May. During the cooler months we run a limited program, generally one get-together session a month, whilst targeting some key winter events (Bay Run, City to Surf etc). Over spring & summer, the main focus is an aquathon program (operating in daylight savings times) which is a competitive club race where members are graded and compete in "waves". These events are timed and published so that club-members can gauge their performance and improvement over the course of the season, all whilst supporting and competing against their friends in the same waves. Club-members involve themselves in as many or as little of the calendar program as they choose.
The program also provides coaching and other preparatory sessions that allow members to compete in official Triathlon NSW events. At 2010's NSW Club Championships hosted at Nelson Bay, Concord finished 19th NSW club, out of the 57 clubs registered in the state. We are proud of this result for a small club - we punched well above our weight category. The training programs we run, in particular the aquathons, simulate race conditions in terms of transition and competition, and are a great way of tuning fitness and having fun.
Your CTC membership also provides concessional membership with Tri NSW, the peak industry body.
In addition, CTC promotes a healthy, interactive social calendar for those who want to network on triathlon, fitness and related topics. CTC plays the role as conduit for training, preparation and competition - and are a nice bunch of people too. For many of our members, CTC is a part of their program and association with triathlon. Other specialised groups are supporters / channels to the club for running, cycling, swim squad training etc, based on individual requirements.
For Season 2010/2011, The Concord Cannibals will again operate from both the picturesque Cabarita Swim Centre in Cabarita Park, and the Drummoyne Swim Centre at Drummoyne Bay. The new season will open on September 1 with official season launch occurring on Wednesday October 6 at the Drummoyne Swim Centre. Feel free to contact us for more details, or come down and say hello or participate - its up to you.

Aquathon Cancellation Process
As CTC members know, the conditions can often be quite changeable down at the bay.
We are subject to the weather and wish to share the event cancellation procedure in the event of bad weather.
Invariably, one aquathon a season will be affected by weather - this is often because of lightning - and ALM will close the pool if the gap between thunder and lightning indicates proximity within 3 km of the pool. Everyone out! This is state safety regulation.
Further, the Committee reserves the right to cancel an event if we consider the conditions unsafe for competition, or if we feel that club-members will be put at risk on the course.
Cancellation will occur when conditions are nasty - the Committee will make a decision by 5pm on the day and will notify the host pool of our decision. As such if the weather is poor, please contact the pool and see if the event is still on. Often we will have several progress reports with the pool over the course of the afternoon if it looks dubious. So please call the pool after 5pm for confirmation, if ever in doubt.
